GP Rating is a Six-month Pre-Sea Training Program approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. The training comprises of theoretical and Practical study of General Ship Knowledge and Marine Engineering Knowledge which allows the successful trainees to join the merchant shipping in the Deck or Engineering Department as a Trainee GP Rating. They perform tasks related to Seamanship, Cargo Handling, Maintenance work on deck, Operation and Maintenance of Machinery.
Pre-Sea Training for Ratings will also include the Following Basic STCW 1978 as amended courses:
1. Proficiency in Survival Techniques
2. Elementary First Aid
3.Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
4. Personal Safety and Social Responsibility
5. Security Training For Seafarers Designated with Security Duties

10 Pass from Govt. Approved Board with subject English, Science & Maths with 40% agg. & 40% Marks In English OR12 Pass (any steam) from Govt. Approved Board with 40% agg. Subjects Eng, Sci. & Maths in10 & 40% Marks in English in 10 /12 ORITI Pass (2 yrs - Fitter / Machinist / Welder / Turner) from DVET NCVT with 40% agg. In final year of ITI & 40% in English In 10 /12 |

Physical & Medical Standards: |
Physically fit and should meet the medical requirements as specified by DGS guidelines 6/6 or 6/9 eyesight without visual aids and no color blindness |
